Versace Wallpaper: The Guide

Seeking to spread the impact of his iconic lifestyle brand to other areas of life beyond fashion, Gianni Versace created Versace Home in 1992. Initially limited to a textile collection, it quickly became a complete home collection that includes iconic wallpaper models which exude Versace’s joie de vivre and unabashed sensuality to define spaces aiming to be as far removed from the mundane as possible. Having become a stand-alone brand within the House of Versace universe, every collection of these wall coverings represents the up-to-date vision of its creator, while always staying true to the brand's bold and opulent signature aesthetic. Using durable, high-quality materials and featuring Versace’s immortal eye-catching designs, this Italian wall décor is the ideal choice for those seeking to make a bold statement that exudes a sense of timeless elegance.

Why should I pick a Versace wall covering for my home?

Versace wall décor aptly summarises everything the brand represents: neo-baroque patterns made from the finest materials (like sensual satin with its opulent sheen) in a world of pure elegance and exclusivity.

A sense of elegant exclusivity

You don’t pick a Versace wallpaper by chance. It simply cannot be confused with other brands. Iconic motifs with remarkable oriental flair, stunning geometric patterns and mysterious floral romance create interiors of breath-taking radiance. Managing to convey a sense of warm yet sexy classiness, they make a statement that will impress and dazzle.

Haute Couture for your walls

There is nothing understated in a House of Versace wallpaper. Daring, spectacular, sexy, and elegant, these luxury models boast the same irresistible attributes as the high fashion garments and accessories Versace is famous for. Whether inspired by Greco-Roman classicism, namely the iconic Medusa head and Greek Key, or revisiting extravagant Italian Baroque motives, Versace wallpapers bring the allure of Milan’s catwalks to your walls.

A touch of glamorous Dolce Vita

Gianni Versace grew up next to the remains of a Greek temple in Reggio Calabria, and as a child he spent hours imagining the past glory of the place, walking along memories of a once fabulous Greco-Roman heritage. This inspired the motifs behind Versace wallpapers: quintessentially Italian, in-your-face glamour. Unafraid to showcase the overtly sexual lifestyle ancient Rome and Greece were notorious for, Versace wallpaper models showcase quintessential luxury and the inimitable Italian style.

Baroque and oriental opulence

Never afraid to challenge the conventional, and having grown up in a land where the mystique of the Orient is on the opposite shores - near, yet impossibly far away - Versace wall décor also takes in Middle Eastern influences. The “Arabian Nights” fairy tales, the fabled beauty of Scheherazade… They are all reflected in our Versace wallcoverings with their baroque elements and sheer opulence.

What is the fascinating history of Gianni Versace?

In his short life, Gianni Versace revolutionised the world of fashion, haute couture and home design, pushed the LGBTQ+ movement decades into the future, and single-handedly created the enduring top model phenomenon.

A childhood in Reggio Calabria, working in his mother’s tailor shop

The middle child of a relatively wealthy family from southern Italian, Gianni Versace grew up with the fashion genes running in his blood. While his father made a living selling appliances, his mother Francesca was an accomplished tailor, already known around Italy for her sartorial skills and for making the most desired bridal dresses in all of Reggio Calabria.

Learning the skills of the trade

Young Gianni loved spending hours on end watching his mother work with thread and needles and copying her skilled handiwork. This is where he learnt that the secret behind beautiful dresses lies in perfecting true sartorial artisanship. Throughout his life, when asked what he would like to be called, he always replied by stating “I am a tailor. The true artist is the tailor.”.

Moving to Milan as the city blossoms into the capital of fashion

At the age of 25, Gianni decided to take his talents to the business capital of Italy, in the north of the country, just as the city was challenging the long-established idea that only what was shown on the catwalks of Paris or New York mattered in the world of haute couture. With the number of fashion houses registered in the official calendar quickly going from 14 to 52, it was the perfect place for Versace to start making his mark.

A career begins as a designer for “Byblos”

Once in Milan, Gianni started designing for a number of labels, amongst them Byblos, an up-and-coming Italian youth line. The collections he created immediately received recognition in the fashion world, drawing requests of collaborations from other brands and thereby laying the basis for the idea of creating his own fashion house.

A sudden, tragic and mysterious death

Gianni’s life was tragically cut short on the morning of July 15th, 1997. As he was returning home, a mysterious man approached him while he was on the steps of his Miami mansion and shot him at point blank, killing him instantly. Nobody knows the reasons behind his murder, and over the years, his highly-publicised death has become the subject of countless true-crime documentaries and television shows.

When was the House of Versace founded?

Building on his early success designing collections for other designers, in 1978 Gianni Versace decided it was time to open his own fashion house, initially called “Gianni Versace Donna”, although it was soon expanding to menswear and then to home furnishing and accessories.

The first boutique in Via della Spiga

Seeking to keep a tight family business connection, Gianni asked his older brother Santo to support him from the start, by taking control of the newly founded fashion house from a management standpoint. Together they opened a shop in Via della Spiga, a street that is, then as now, the epicentre of the fashion industry in Milan.

Versace’s style takes shape

With the boutique at street level and the headquarters located on the floor above, Gianni was able to let his creativity run free, creating Dionysian glamour formed by the flamboyant carnal interplay between pop, rock and baroque. Versace’s sense of fashion was free of any visible sense of inhibition, and he was inventing trends rather than following them. He played with innovative materials, created new shapes and colours and took inspiration from his classical background, reimagining Greek columns in blazing colours for the motifs of his dresses and wallpapers.

What are Versace’s influences beyond the world of fashion?

Gianni Versace’s talents spread far and wide, like that of a true renaissance man. His interests and influences determined theatre costume designs, celebrities’ stardom, architecture and home interior design.

A passion for costume design for theatres and opera houses

Seeing fashion as a theatre set, a fantasy life of opulent sensuality, he collaborated with the Scala Opera House in Milan as well as the Teatro Piccolo, creating costumes for memorable shows, including Gustav Mahler’s “Lieb und Leid” and Donizetti’s “Don Pasquale”. His costume designs revitalised the world of opera and made huge waves in the world of classical music.

A star amongst celebrities

By choosing to focus on a few high-end models for his campaigns, Versace single-handedly created the supermodel phenomenon that swept through the 80s and 90s. He was friends with most of the celebrities of his time. Bruce Springsteen celebrated his wedding in Gianni’s house and Versace designed costumes and sets for Michael Jackson, Paul McCartney and Elton John, amongst others.

A love for architecture and the celebrated Versace Mansion in Miami

Also known as Casa Casuarina, he had fallen in love with the place on his way to a trip to Cuba with his life partner Antonio D’Amico. While passing by it on Ocean Drive, Gianni stopped to admire a bronze statue, called Kneeling Aphrodite, he saw in front of the house. He immediately was beguiled by it and proceeded to purchase and restore it at great expense, including adding a mosaic of Medusa, making it his new home.

The expansion to home interiors

Like a true Renaissance artist, Gianni Versace was not to be contained in the limited realm of fashion. With his passion for architecture, it was no surprise when in 1992 the House of Versace moved to designing home interiors, first experimenting with textile and dinnerware and then moving to lighting and wallpapers. Versace's wallpaper collections featuring several of his iconic patterns have been widely used to decorate boutiques, chic hotel lobbies and opulent residences.

Which motifs and patterns make Versace wallpapers instantly recognisable?

Decisively not a fan of understatement, Versace wallpaper motifs are a byword for luxury, glamour and high fashion. His bold and vibrant wallpaper designs, blending Greco-Roman heritage with baroque and oriental vibes, are typical for the brand's iconic style.

Medusa Black

“When people look at Versace, they must feel terrified, petrified, just like looking into the eyes of Medusa.” One of the most iconic and easily recognisable fashion symbols of all time, the Medusa logo was designed by Gianni himself in 1992. Strikingly unique, her hand-drawn face looks at us dead on, a slight smile on her face, while being surrounded by a traditional Greek design border.

Oriental jungle and birds

Colourful parrots frolicking in a lush tropical jungle, displayed in bold and vivid colours, with intricate details and a variety of other exotic birds and animals scattered along palm trees, leaves and vines -this Versace pattern, first popularised on silk scarves, shirts, and handbags, perfectly represents the stylist’s love for opulent orientalism.

The legendary Greek Key (Meander)

Used in ancient Greece to decorate a number of household objects like pottery and vases as well as architectural elements, the renaissance of the meander is a testament to Gianni Versace’s love of the classical design style. Originally simply a repeating pattern featuring a continuous interlocking design, Versace’s interpretation in wall décor transformed it by enhancing its graphic style and adding vibrant colours, creating an iconic symbol for the brand's luxurious aesthetic.

Which colour combinations are traditionally found on Versace wall décor?

Celebrated for his bold and vibrant colour palette, Versace’s wallpaper style features strong tonalities, with bright and eye-catching hues that include black and gold, blue and yellow as well as black and green.

Black and Gold

Perhaps the most iconic colour combination from the House of Versace, black and gold are a staple of the brand’s aesthetic. The most celebrated use in wallpaper design includes both the Medusa Head and the Meander pattern. The darkness of black is the perfect counterbalance for the gleam of gold, creating a captivating mix that combines the magic of the night with the radiance of the sun.

Blue and Yellow

Gianni Versace was never disinclined to remind the world of his southern Italian heritage. He loved the energy and colours of his native Reggio Calabria, soaked in the blazing sun of the Mediterranean. As a result, blue and yellow are often appearing together in the fashion house’s wallpaper models that draw from this southern vibe. These wall décor models that feature sunny yellow hues set against deep, oceanic blue backgrounds, are an homage to Gianni Versace’s love for Italy and Greece.

Gold and Cream

The softer and warmer alternative to black and gold, Versace wallpapers featuring gold and cream are frequently used for designs featuring a range of classical motifs, ranging from intricate baroque patterns to linear and geometrical motifs and his celebrated and glorious scroll work. Setting rich and sun-soaked gold motifs against a soft creamy background, these wallpaper models retain a sense of sumptuous luxury while simultaneously being warm and inviting.

Is Versace wallpaper easy to hang and clean?

Consisting of non-woven backing materials and coated with vinyl surfaces, Versace wallpapers are very easy to clean, robust and built to last even in high traffic areas.

Non-woven material for easy pasting

Made from high-quality and durable non-woven material, Versace wall coverings are more robust than paper-based models and less likely to tear or rip. When it comes to putting them up, the big advantage is that they don’t require soaking in wallpaper paste as they can be put up dry on a wall covered with wallpapering adhesive, making the process easier and reducing the risk of damage. This also makes them easier to remove when it’s time to replace them.

Vinyl-coated surfaces enable wiping away dirt and stains

Another advantage of Versace wallpaper models is that they are treated with a robust vinyl coating, adding a number of desirable properties beyond their glamour and beauty. Vinyl wallpapers are more resistant to scratches and stains, have a longer lifespan, and can be easily cleaned with a (damp) cloth. In addition, their ability to withstand humidity makes them suitable for kitchens and bathrooms.
