Who are the designers that started Studio Ditte?

Studio Ditte is the result of the collaborative effort by three creative Dutch designers that founded it after leaving university in order to pursue their dreams.

A meeting at the art academy in The Hague initiates the collaboration

At the dawn of the new millennium, three young women enrolled in the prestigious Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. Founded in the 17th century, this academy is one of the oldest in the world and has been the training ground for many artists who are part of the renowned Modern Age of Dutch painting. Marieke Dirks, Natasja Heesbeen and Endry van Zwam felt right at home there and soon discovered their common love for designing beautiful objects.

A tale of three mothers

Their friendship turned into a business partnership as they sought to shape their design vision into a commercial entity, and in 2005 they founded Studio Ditte. Soon they began to design stunning wallpaper models inspired by their surroundings. As they became mothers, their attention naturally focused on what their children found fascinating, which inspired the beautiful children’s wallpapers in their collection.

What is the philosophy behind Studio Ditte wallpapers?

Transforming everyday objects into something magical is the central philosophy that drives Studio Ditte’s work. The balance of space, colours and void designed to create a positive and calming emotional response is the key to their success.

Inspired by life

The core tenet of every Studio Ditte wallpaper is the idea of looking at common and familiar everyday objects from a different angle and transforming them into something unique and appealing by providing a fresh view and room for stories and dreams. Carefully striking a balance between childlike imagination and a generous pinch of nostalgia, objects like toy cars, vintage robots, spoons or plates become hidden treasures, elevated to art installations that invoke emotions and offer a new perspective of life.

A creative puzzle of images

Seeking to bring order to chaos, the three Dutch artists started their creative journey by taking photographs of their day-to-day surroundings, combining them with elements of the past, the environment, or nature. Each object is then deconstructed into its individual elements and rebuilt with fresh colours and perspective, laid out in a choreographed geometry that manages to be soothing despite the amount of details being shown.

The power of emotions

To understand what makes Studio Ditte’s motifs so appealing and calming, it is necessary to explore the emotional energy and values they represent. These objects are imbued with personality, their designs invoking a feeling of familiarity, intimacy, and well-being. The toys are shiny and new because this is how a child sees them, while wooden planks and tiles are weathered by time and use, providing a bond with our daily life.

Which are the most popular motifs featured on Studio Ditte wall décor?

Vehicles, animals, materials and odd objects like spoons laid out in an artistic geometrical composition that cleverly balances the void spaces are the motifs for which the company made its name in the wallpaper world.

Cute animals

The beautiful animals depicted on Studio Ditte wall décor share a geometrical origin that makes them stand out. Often created utilising a vintage low-polygons technique that simplifies their shape, or made to look like papier-mâché masks with colourful details and cute eyes, they retain their adorable miniature toy look.

Car, planes and rockets

There is a touch of nostalgia sprinkled on each and every Studio Ditte wallpaper featuring vehicles. Despite the gleam of their chrome details and bright colours, the racing cars, firemen trucks and ambulances, even robots and spaceships, are reminiscent of a safe past where childhood toys were a kid’s most treasured possession.

Whimsical objects

Never afraid to challenge conventions when it comes to picking objects for their patterns, and seeking inspiration from what we encounter in our daily life, the creative minds behind Studio Ditte design unique and beautiful wallpapers that turn everyday objects into decorative elements. Spoons, buttons and ribbons are magically transformed into a mesmerising canvas.

Ceramics and tiles

True masters of reproducing reality in highly detailed, imaginative prints, Studio Ditte’s collection of wallpapers featuring antique tiles, blue porcelain or colourful saucers represents an expansion beyond the traditional world of children’s rooms wall décor into other areas of the house, such as kitchens or corridors. The blue Frisian and Dutch tiles with signs of wear and tear or the charming porcelain models are a fantastic choice for a stunning feature wall.

Which rooms are best suited for Studio Ditte wall décor?

The company became famous for unique motifs designed for children, so it is not surprising that nurseries and children’s rooms tend to be the natural habitat for their wallpaper. Their innovative tile and ceramic models however are very suitable for stylish kitchens.

An inspiring children’s room

A child’s imagination is a powerful tool and one of the keys to their development, which is why it needs to be nurtured and supported. Studio Ditte’s incredibly detailed wallpapers, so full of wonderful details and rich colours, are a source of endless fascination for the little ones. Whether it’s cute jungle animals, vintage toy cars, vintage robots or propeller planes, there are always more details to discover.

A fun-filled nursery

In their first few months of development, babies are not yet able to fully focus on objects, but they are very responsive to colours. With its bright but pleasant colour palette, Studio Ditte’s wall décor is an appropriate choice for decorating a nursery. Whether it’s colourful toucans in shades of green or adorable hares and foxes, the motifs will fascinate and enchant your baby.

A kitchen brimming with personality

That unpleasant sensation of having a modern but soulless kitchen, unfortunately very common in newly built urban dwellings, can easily be fought off with Studio Ditte wallpaper depicting antique porcelain plates or weathered scrap wood. Featuring the company’s signature feature - incredibly realistic and detailed prints - they bring a splash of colour and character to an otherwise cold environment.

Are wallpapers by Studio Ditte sustainable and easy to install?

Coming from a country with a strong history of awareness regarding ecological issues and paying special attention to the little customers that will enjoy their wallpapers, Studio Ditte is extremely keen to ensure that their models are sustainable and can be installed without prior expertise.

Proudly Made in Holland

As the majority of wallpapers created by Studio Ditte ends up in the rooms of babies and small children, it is of paramount importance for Marieke, Natasja and Endry to have full control of the way they are manufactured. For this reason, they prefer to keep production close to home, despite the higher costs this entails. All of their wallpapers are produced and printed in their factory in the Netherlands.

High-quality biodegradable materials and environmentally friendly inks

All wallpaper models produced by Studio Ditte are created from high-quality material free of any harmful substances. The wood pulp used comes from renewable sources certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, a non-profit organisation that promotes responsible forest management. In addition, all inks used in the printing process are biodegradable.

An eco-friendly production cycle

Studio Ditte’s ecological and sustainable credentials don’t stop at the production material. Approaching sustainability from a more integrated perspective, the company channels all the residual heat created during the wallpaper production process to heat a large part of the premises, thus reducing their carbon footprint. Furthermore, the paper waste goes back to the factory where it’s produced, fully closing the circle.

Non-woven material makes installation easy

In order to make sure that installing their wallpapers is as stress-free as possible and achievable without professional help, the ladies behind Studio Ditte decided early on that all their models were to be produced using only non-woven material. This allows an easy and uncomplicated installation process: the lengths of wallpaper do not require soaking in wallpapering paste; instead they can be put up in a dry state after applying the adhesive directly to the wall.
